Halloween Pasta Graphing

During my latest trip to Cost Plus World Market, I found this fun Halloween pasta and immediately knew that it would be perfect for a graphing activity!

I gave each student a small Dixie cup with some pasta.  The students sorted the pasta and then counted how many they had of each shape.

Then they colored in their graphing sheets to match the amounts they had.

The kids also figured out which shape they had the most of and which shape they had the least of and drew a picture of those shapes on their recording sheet.

Happy Halloween!

Jack-o'-lantern Counting Mathtivity

The fall weather is slow to come to Southern California, but I am still having a great time completing fall projects with my kindergarten students!

Last week we made these fun jack-o'-lanterns and they look fantastic on my math bulletin board!

I copied the jack-o'-lantern onto orange construction paper.  Then the students colored the stem brown and the leaf green.

They decided how many teeth they wanted for their jack-o'-lantern.  I used dry white beans for the teeth!

They counted out the beans that they wanted to use and then glued them onto the mouth area.

Then they wrote the correct number to complete the sentence.

After drying overnight, I cut around the pumpkin and the sentence, and put them up on the bulletin board.  My room is really starting to look like fall!

You can find this activity in my TpT store.

Let's Compare Numbers!

We have been working on comparing numbers and we have been playing a fun game with our subitizing dot plates!

We call it, DRIVE and COMPARE!

Here's how to play!

1.  Each student gets a dot plate.
2.  While you play some music, the students walk around the room with their dot plates.  {We like to pretend that we are driving cars or spaceships!}

3.  Turn off the music and have the students stop walking.
4.  Each student finds a partner.
5.  They compare the dot plates and discuss the numbers.  Which number is greater?  Which is fewer/less?  Or are they the same?

Students use these sentence frames.
6.  Then turn the music back on and play again!

You can pick up a fun holiday FREEBIE for comparing numbers in my TpT store! After you download it, please be sure to leave feedback!

Thrifty Thursday {subitizing plates}

It's Thursday and time for a Thrifty Thursday link up with Greg from Kindergarten Smorgasboard.

Subitizing?

*to perceive at a glance the number of items presented
*instantly seeing how many

In Kindergarten we spend a lot of the year working on subitizing.  At the start of my math hour, I show 3-4 dot images for a few seconds each and we discuss what the students saw.  This is called "Number Talks".  You can find more information in the book Number Talks by Sherry Parrish.  I haven't read this book, but have heard great things!

While attending a math training this past spring, I was able to "make and take" these subitizing plates.  I keep a stack of them at my teacher chair so they are ready to be used whenever I need them!

They are easy to make and Thrifty, with a capital "T"!!!

*************************
Materials needed:
Paper plates - I used a heavy cardboard style plate that my school had on hand
Bingo markers - you can also use regular markers and draw circles or use circle stickers

Simply copy the dot patterns onto the paper plates - don't forget zero!
Here are the dot patterns that you can copy.  Click above to access the pdf.
*************************

Check out this video from the Teaching Channel.  It gives you an idea on how to use the plates.  The teacher here uses a ten frame, which I use a little later in the year.

Memorial Day Blog Hop

Happy Memorial Day weekend!!!  So excited to be a part of the Memorial Day Blog Hop with a fabulous group of bloggers/educators!

***The Memorial Day Blog Hop has now ended***

Whether you are taking in a parade this weekend, attending a BBQ, or just relaxing, be sure to spend a few moments remembering those men and women who died while serving our country.

I have a math freebie for you today, Make 10 with Little Birdie!  It will only be free during the blog hop 5/24/14-5/26/14.

You will need to add your own manipulatives.
We like using the counters that are red on one side and yellow on the other.

Students pick a number card and place it on the mat.
Then they place the same number of counters on the ten frame.

Students fill in the rest of the ten frame with different color counters.
They count those and write the number in the space.

Students can then read the number sentence to their partner
and/or record the sentence on a recording sheet.

Hope you enjoy this!  Just click on the thumbnail below to find it in my store!

Now head over to Teaching Momster to see what Krista has for you!

Ribbon War

Even though it is Thursday ... I'm linking up with Teaching Momster today for her Math Madness Wednesday!  This week's theme is Measurement.

Here in Kindergarten, we recently finished our Measurement unit and my kiddos really enjoyed playing the game Ribbon War!  The game is played in a similar manner to any War game.  In the game, students compare the length of 2 ribbons and describe which one is shorter and which one is longer, or if they are the same.

Here is how to play!

Materials needed:
ribbon
storage container to hold the ribbon (paper bag, plastic container, etc.)

Prep:
Cut the ribbon into different lengths (from 1 inch to 24 inches).  Place the ribbon lengths into the storage container.  Make sure there is an even number of ribbons.

Let's Play:
The game is played with a partner.
1.  Each student grabs a ribbon out of the bag.  They place them next to each other on the desk/floor, being sure to line up the end points of the ribbons.
2.  Students tell their partner if their ribbon is longer, shorter, or the same as their partner's ribbon.
3.  The person with the longer ribbon gets to keep both ribbons.  If the ribbons are the same, each person picks another piece of ribbon and compares them.
4.  Continue playing until all of the ribbons are used.
5.  Play again!

I have also posted the directions in a file on TpT.  Click below to grab it!
